Vegetable Gardening Tips

Growing your own vegetables is a rewarding and fun experience, whether you intend to completely replace store bought produce or just want a fun activity for the family to enjoy. Whether this is your first vegetable garden or your hundredth, you want your vegetables to turn out the best they can. Here are some tips to help you grow a great vegetable garden.

All good vegetable gardens start with a good plan. Before you till the soil or even procure the seeds, you need to lay out a plan that includes what you’re planting and where. Vegetable plants need a certain amount of space and you need to keep this in mind while making your plan. Plants also have different sunlight requirements, so make sure that not only are they planted in areas where they’ll get the right amount, but that when the plants grow in, they won’t be blocking the sun from their smaller neighbors. It’s also a good idea to group plants based on their particular moisture needs to prevent under or over watering.

The health of your soil is another important thing to think about. Plants get their nutrients from the soil in which they grow. Thus, the health of the soil has a direct impact on the health of your plants and the quality of your harvest. If the soil around your home isn’t good, you can buy better soil to replace or supplement it. Compost is another way to add nutrients to your soil. Compost is basically just decomposed plants. You can start a compost pile of your own by layering yard waste and kitchen scraps in a well-aerated pile or buy compost at the store. Believe it or not, too much compost is a bad thing, so don’t overdo it.

Think about plant health. Soil health is a big part of this, but not the only factor. You need to water your plants the correct way to encourage good growth. You should always water vegetable gardens at the soil level, not from above. When you water from the soil level, the water can penetrate deeper into the soil and this promotes deeper root growth. Pulling weeds will also help keep your vegetable plants healthy by eliminating the competition for resources.

At the end of the season, start planning your next garden. A good place to start is to harvest some vegetables specifically for their seeds. Only use seeds from the best vegetables you harvest. The best time to harvest plants for seeds varies depending on the plant, with some plants like tomatoes and peppers having viable seeds at ripeness and others, like eggplants and cucumbers, having viable seeds at well past where you would want to eat them. Check well before the end of the season when you should harvest seed stock so you can get them at the right time.
